Communication Skills Training

In 2015, the Marie Curie Palliative Care Institute Liverpool (MCPCIL), in partnership with Queenscourt Hospice and education providers from Wirral and Cheshire, was successful in its tender for the delivery of a three tier communication skills training programme within the Cheshire and Merseyside Strategic Clinical Networks (please note: these are not cancer specific courses)

Costs

    • 1st year (2015/2016) - programme of all courses will be fully funded up until August 2016
    • 2nd year - funding organisations/individual to pay 40% of course costs -
      • ACST £160.00 per participant
      • Intermediate £25.00 per participant
    • 3rd year - funding organisations/individual to pay 60% of course costs
      • ACST £240.00 per participant for 2017/18 courses

Three tier communication skills training programme

Level 1:

Core Training

The participant will be able 

1.  to recognise that people express distress and strong emotion in a variety of ways

2.  to elicit concerns

3.  to recognise behaviours which impact on communication positively or negatively

4.  to recognise personal limitations and direct patients/carers to appropriate services or professionals

This ½ day course aims to develop the skills necessary for staff to be able to support patients and families by communicating with honesty and compassion and to recognise emotional distress.

It is particularly appropriate for Nurses, HCAs and AHPs

 

30 participants per course

Delivery will include didactic presentations, small group work, video clips, Simple Skills Secrets  

 

Level 2: Intermediate Training

The participant will be able 

1.  to elicit and explore concerns

2.  identify appropriate communication skills and strategies

3.  to respond effectively within their professional role

4.  to recognise issues beyond their scope of practice and refer on accordingly

This 1 day course build on the knowledge and skills of staff to enable them to assess informational and emotional need and to respond effectively

It is particularly appropriate for

Junior Doctors, Nurses, HCAs and AHPs

20 participants per course

Delivery will include  didactic presentation, small group work, video clips, role play demonstration, Simple Skills Secrets and goldfish bowl role play    

Level 3: Advanced Training

1.  Increase awareness of own communication skills. 

 2.  Explore strategies to improve quality of clinical communication 

 3. Increase ability to deliver information effectively and explore decision making.

This 2 day advanced communication skills training uses the model of training developed by the National Cancer Action Team (Connected).   It is particularly appropriate for any experienced health or social care professional who is involved in complex communication with patients or their families

10 participants per course

Delivery will include  didactic presentation, small group work, video recorded role play demonstration, experiential exercises
