Greater Manchester Lancs & South Cumbria Senate

Building our Senate Councils and Assembly membership

28th September 2018

We continue to welcome new applications to join our North West Senates Assembly and have also been actively recruiting new members to both our Senate Councils.

Senate Council Membership

The two North West Clinical Senate Councils; Greater Manchester, Lancashire & South Cumbria (GMLSC) and Cheshire & Merseyside (C&M); are recruiting new members.

Clinical Senates are non-statutory advisory bodies, that are hosted by NHS England but that operate independently of it. This independence is a core principle of Senates way of working.  The focus of Clinical Senates’ functions is that they provide impartial clinical advice which is in the best interest of the population, not of organisations or professional interests.  Objectivity and neutrality are essential to Clinical Senates’ credibility.

The time commitment is anticipated to be no more than 1 day a month on average. There is an expectation that members will be released from their host organisations to undertake these duties.

The aim is to ensure that Council membership as a whole reflects a breath of expertise across care settings, clinical professions, the wider system and geographically. In particular therefore, we are particularly keen to appoint members from the following areas:

  • Primary Care (particularly C&M)
  • Allied Health Professionals
  • Nursing
  • Social care
  • Patient and public representatives (particularly GMLSC)

However, selection will be made firstly on the basis of prospective members’ skills and expertise, and secondly to ensure a balanced group in those terms.

To apply, please complete the application form found here, detailing how you meet the required criteria for qualifications, knowledge and experience, as detailed in the job description and person specification which can be found below for each Council and return to

The closing date for applications is close of play on Friday 7th December 2018 with an interview/assessment date in January 2019.

For further information, and/or to arrange a conversation with either the Senate Manager, Caroline Baines or the relevant Clinical Senate Chair (Prof Donal O’Donoghue for GMLSC and Dr Cecil Kullu for C&M), please contact the NW Clinical Senates’ Management Team on 01925 607197 or  We look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Senate Assembly membership

We are pleased to have welcomed a number of new Senate Assembly members since August and continue to encourage applications from enthusiastic and passionate health and social care professionals from across all disciplines.

If you are actively involved in healthcare delivery and able to command the respect of both clinical and non-clinical professionals, we’d love to hear from you. We are particularly keen to recruit members working within social care and primary care from across the North West. Additionally, in Cheshire & Merseyside we are keen to see an increased number of Consultants from the Cheshire area.
