A briefing for clinicians on delivering the best patient outcomes within available resources - produced by the South East Clinical Senate.

The concept of ‘value’ in health care is taking centre stage as one of the keys to sustainable health services in the 21st century.

Health services now need to focus on delivering value for patients and the population, specifically: achieving the best patient outcomes within the available resources.

We are only at the early stages of developing methodologies to assess value. This requires a redefinition of meaningful outcomes from health care interventions (prevention, diagnostics and treatments), finding ways for patients to more actively participate in deciding the best treatment for them, and having a better health economic understanding of the full pathway costs of the different treatment options available.

This briefing, produced by the South East Clinical Senate, aims to:

  • Help health care professionals to understand the concept of 'value' in health care provision
  • Recommend how clinicians can take this forward in partnership with their patients and population, and their managerial colleagues.
