News of work with Clinical Reference Groups and meetings with STPs

5th October 2017

Our Senates Manager Caroline Baines has been out and about networking and meeting with colleagues across the region over the Summer months, exploring opportunities to collaborate and support partners across the region.

Meanwhile our Senates support team has been busy organising and running various meetings and events, as well as providing vital admin support for our Senate Councils and Assembly. Here's an overview of recent meetings and events and what's coming this Autumn.

Cheshire and Merseyside STP working group meeting

Caroline and our Cheshire and Merseyside Senate Chair Dr Cecil Kullu attended this meeting to discuss the role of the Senate and ways that the Senate could potentially support the STP going forward. There was a really enthusiastic and positive discussion, with areas covered including:

  • The Senate's role in supporting formal stage 2 assurance
  • Acting as a critical friend earlier on in service development plans to provide advice and constructive challenge
  • Sharing lessons learned from other areas nationally that have been through similar reviews and experiences.

Clinical Reference Group Summit

We were delighted to be invited to present and host a workshop at this summit on 11th July 2017, which was organised by Dr Michael Gregory (Regional Clinical Director for Specialised Commissioning in NHS England North).

This provided an excellent and productive opportunity to explore how Clinical Senates and Clinical Reference Groups can work effectively together, including the opportunities and any potential conflicts between the two.

Discussions were very positive, with lots of enthusiasm for more joined-up working and we were delighted that the vast majority of CRG members agreed to support future Senate work, as appropriate to their expertise, which was backed up by them being co-opted onto our NW Senates Assembly.

Clinical Review masterclass

Our Clinical Review masterclass will be taking place on 20th November in Preston. The masterclass is designed to give new assembly members - or those who have yet to undertake a review - a ‘real-life’ opportunity to go through the review process, as well as to give more experienced Senate review panel colleagues an opportunity to chair a panel.

We are really lucky to have colleagues from the Northern Clinical Networks and Senate joining us to share their experiences of going through judicial review – a must-hear for anyone working within the field of service change!
