The service won the National Maternal Mental Health Alliance 2018 Award for Best Family Focused Service, which took place on 6 September.

The specialist service, based in the community, supports parents, infants, families and professionals in Knowsley, and is delivered by North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

The Building Attachment and Bonds Service (BABS) is an innovative, easy to engage, parent infant mental health service, providing support to the families of Knowsley. The service helps parents and infants to build the best possible bond and attachment relationship, which lies at the core of positive parent and infant mental health.

One of the service’s key strengths is its collaborative multi-disciplinary team approach in supporting vulnerable and hard to reach families. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated by their engagement rate of 96 per cent.

Dr Lisa Marsland, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Strategic Service Lead of Building Attachment and Bonds Service (BABS) and Chair of our Perinatal Mental Health Adult and Specialist Cheshire and Merseyside working group, said:

“We are over the moon to be recognised in this way and to win such a highly acclaimed award from the Maternal Mental Health Alliance. Our service for the past four years has been making massive life-changing outcomes for the people of Knowsley, with significant human and economic costs being avoided."

“We are over the moon to be recognised in this way and to win such a highly acclaimed award from the Maternal Mental Health Alliance. Our service for the past four years has been making massive life-changing outcomes for the people of Knowsley, with significant human and economic costs being avoided.

“Relationships are everything, and we want to ensure this provision can be made available for families across other areas of the UK. A big thank you goes out to the Trust, our commissioners and most of all, the families who let us into their lives so we can build bonds and break negative life cycles for future generations to come.”

Gail Briers, Chief Nurse and Director of Operational Clinical Services at North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“I’m incredibly proud of the work of the Building Attachment and Bonds Service in Knowsley; to win a second national award in 2018 is a fabulous achievement, which they truly deserve.

“They are working with some of the most vulnerable families in the UK who desperately need this service, which will help them break through their difficulties and build on the most important thing in their lives – the relationship with their baby.
