Members of the Diabetes Team have recently been trained by Diabetes UK (DUK) to deliver Diabetes ‘Know Your Risk’ sessions to the public. They’ll be putting their training to good use during Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Week by visiting health and community venues across the region and speaking to people about their risk of developing the condition.

The DUK ‘Know Your Risk’ process identifies people who are at moderate or high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and encourages them to self-refer and follow up with their GP.

They are given a letter and documentation around their risk score, highlighting they are at risk. The process also identifies people at low and increased risk and signposts them to lifestyle changes to help them reduce or remove this risk.

During the interactions, people will also gain an understanding of the causes of Type 2 diabetes, associated complications and who is at an increased risk of developing the condition.

As well as providing advice and information on Type 2, the team will also be talking to people about help that is available through the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme.
